From Bremen via Lübeck, Wismar to Stralsund

This route makes for an attractive combination of ancient history Hanseatic League monuments with classical turn-of-the-century Baltic seaside resorts. From the Hanseatic city of Bremen, the northern route leads along grassland and fields passing the medieval city of Lüneburg.

Enjoy the multi-faceted countryside on your itinerary to the Mare Balticum. A journey along the Baltic Sea connecting the northern and eastern European countries has to start at Lübeck, the Gate to the Baltic.

Lübeck was a member of the Hanseatic League, a powerful medieval trading association, as witnessed by the monumental Holstentor (Holsten gate), an ancient town gate. The journey to Wismar continues via Lake Dassow to Boltenhagen Spa, one of the oldest German Baltic spas.

Mobile bathing carts were used on the beach as early as 1803. On past Wohlenberger Wiek with its vast beaches, through woodlands and fields, to Wismar, the most originally preserved Hanseatic town on the southern Baltic. From Wismar, the journey goes on by a pleasant little detour to two more Baltic spas: Kühlungsborn and Heiligendamm.

At the ”Holy Dam”, Germany’s first seaside resort was established by Arch Duke Friedrich Franz I. It presents to this day a unique setting of imposing lodging, spa, and communal architecture. Via Rostock, and crossing the ”Vorpommersche Boddenlandschaft” National Park containing more charming spas, you arrive at Stralsund, the Hanseatic town on the Sound.
