THE MAKING OF ART

These days people love art—especially contemporary art. Fascinated by the creative milieu of artists, the public is anxious to share in this special atmosphere. This exhibition offers a look behind the scenes of the contemporary art world. A system, seemingly vast to the uninitiated, consisting of artists, theoreticians, critics, institutions, exhibition organizers, gallery owners, and collectors, reflects a relationship between art, society, and the economy characterized by networks and dependencies. Numerous artworks today mirror the increasing extravagance of the art business. Photographs portray the chic world of the collector. Paintings, normally sold at auctions, address their own economic circumstances. Installations deal with the pressure the market exerts on the career of the artist. And the range of works by artists such as Tracey Emin, Fischli/Weiss, Chéri Samba, Nedko Solakov, and Jonathan Monk, is as multi-layered as the art world itself.
