25 October 2008 – 8 February 2009 ALEC SOTH – Sleeping by the Mississippi, Niagara, Dog Days BogotàPhotographer Alec Soth (*1969) was born in Minneapolis, where he still lives and works. He was inducted into the Magnum agency at an early age. Fotomuseum Winterthur is delighted to be able to present three important, wide-ranging groups of works by this American artist for the first time in Switzerland They are: Sleeping by the Mississippi, Niagara and Dog Days Bogotà. Alec Soth’s photography is rooted in the great American documentary tradition of Walker Evans, Robert Frank, Stephen Shore and William Eggleston. Soth is interested in the simple, trivial aspects of life. His photographs are subtle descriptions of the quotidian, casting a fresh light on American society in stark contrast to its own romantic ideals. Sleeping by the Mississippi charts the traces of human activity on the banks of America’s longest and most iconic river. Niagara is not simply a documentation of a tourist attraction, but a showcase where we can rediscover its cultural identity and its modern-day mythology. Dog Days Bogotà is a gift to Alec Soth’s daughter; it addresses the beauty that resides in this harsh place.
