DARK SIDE 1 – Sexuality, Desire, Fetish

Photography has become part and parcel of our social, public and private lives. It is always there, even behind closed doors, in those dark places where we shut ourselves off from society and where society does not intrude. Fotomuseum Winterthur has always found it important to address these shadowy aspects of society and the individual and to discuss the role that photography plays. As a result, we have so far shown exhibitions of industrial photography, police photography and medical photography. Sexuality, desire, fantasies, eroticism are also important motivating factors in the way society and the individual think and act. Our base instincts are a far stronger driving force than our civilised, rational mindset would allow us to believe. Fantasy and desire have entered into an almost diabolical pact with photography. Our fantasies crave visualisation – they want to be paraded and documented. And photography does have a certain voyeuristic tendency to use the powers of eroticism for its own ends in order to be strong and seductive. The exhibition and publication project entitled Dark Side 1 presents photography as an instrument in the portrayal of sexuality, desire and fetish, and puts these issues forward for discussion. One year down the line, we plan to show a sequel, Dark Side 2, dedicated to violence and disease. The exhibition will be accompanied by a catalogue (in English and German).
