Rachel Harrison. Voyage of the Beagle

In her sculptures, which often incorporate photographic elements and ready-mades, and so oscillate between an abstract and object level, Rachel Harrison (born 1966, in New York) thematises the complexity of art in a humorous manner, playing with the observer’s appetite for decoding meanings. She makes connections with the current discourses on sculpture and installation, but her works frequently remain difficult to describe. Her unfailingly virtuoso sculptures are often constructed in colourfully painted organic-amorphous forms, serving as mounts for ready-mades - whether lifestyle magazines, Calvin Klein underwear packaging, or found photographs - and appearing both finished and unfinished, and therefore always extremely fragile and ephemeral. The strange gathering of materials links kitsch and formalism with a cynical wink of the eye.
