4 June 2008 – 7 September 2008 100th anniversary of “Hoppauf Hakoah”On 2 September 1923 Vienna’s football fans celebrated the 5:0 victory of the Jewish football club Hakoah over the top European team, West Ham United from England. In 1924/25 the Hakoah team won the Austrian football championship and a year later was the first Austrian team to tour the USA.Hakoah (Hebrew: strength) was founded in 1909 as an all-round sports club with a number of sections including football, swimming, tennis, wrestling, water polo, handball, chess, athletics, skiing and hiking. It produced several top Austrian athletes: the swimmers Hedy Bienenfeld-Wertheimer and Idy Kohn won medals at the 1928 European Games and the wrestler Micki Hirschl won two bronze medals at the 1932 Olympic Games. In 1926 the tennis section was particularly successful internationally, and Willi Ehrenreich partnered King George of Sweden. The athlete Arpad Blödy won 14 Austrian titles in sprint and middle-distance events. The battle cry of the club was “Hoppauf Hakoah”.
