The Essl Museum shows new paintings and videos by Markus Muntean and Adi Rosenblum,
an artist couple living in Vienna. When creating their pictorial works Muntean/Rosenblum
draw on inspirational sources, such as classical iconography or colour symbolism and adopt
hand gestures and body postures from the Christian-occidental pictorial tradition, though the
pathos-laden presentation is detached from its religious context and transposed to the
present. Most of the time, teenagers and young adults appear in anonymous urban contexts,
in urban settings that give the impression of having been lifted from fashion or lifestyle
magazines. Muntean/Rosenblum utilise finds from journals and magazines, recycle the
collective and media images of a consumerist youth culture for the purpose of raising
questions about identity and subject. The Zeitgeist outfits, the individuality and self-
confidence are in bold contrast to the young people’s mannered gestures and postures.
