Contemporary Positions of Israeli and Palestinian artists

To mark the 60th anniversary of the foundation of the State of Israel (1948), the Essl Museum takes up a theme lent particular topicality by the most recent political developments in the region.
The works on display will illustrate 10 Israeli and 10 Palestinian positions on themes such as
reminiscences / story-telling, colonialism / racism, trauma / the body, sexuality, love / identity.
What all the artworks have in common is that they address political utopias, revealing ways of
how to deal with dreams / nightmares of real and imagined, common and separate state
models. The key element is experimental artwork on the theme of utopia, specially created for
the Essl Museum by artists collaborating with NGOs in Israel and Palestine, who are
developing the most diverse visions of the region’s future.

The collection of international contemporanean art of Agnes and Karlheinz Essl consisting of 5.000 works offers a view on the art of the 20th and the beginning 21st centuries.
