Paul Klee. Melody and Rhythm

The artistic life of Paul Klee was always dominated by music and painting alike. He was an excellent violinist and an avid opera and concert enthusiast who wrote sharp-tongued music criticisms. For a long time he was undecided whether to become a painter or musician. In his diary he referred to music as his “mistress” and to painting as an “oil-reeking brush goddess I am embracing only because she is my wife”.
The exhibition „Paul Klee. Melody and Rhythm” depicts Klee’s passion for music and his dealing with musicality, melody, rhythm and polyphony. It features about 80-100 exhibits, in which Klee implements musical aspects either structurally or thematically. The show is largely based on exhibits from the collection of the Zentrum Paul Klee and complemented by works on loan from other museums and private collections which also depict the central aspect of the exhibition theme. In addition to these exhibits, materials from Klee’s teaching at the Bauhaus are on display, which are small works of art themselves and give insight into the artist’s theoretical discussion of “music”.
The exhibition is organised in cooperation with the Zentrum Paul Klee, Bern, Switzerland, as part of a temporary partnership between Salzburg and Bern in conjunction with the EURO 08 soccer championship.
