8 March 2008 – 15 August 2008 Hiroshi SugimotoHiroshi Sugimoto, who was born in Tokyo in 1948 and has been living in the United States since 1970, blends Far East traditions and Western modernist and post-modernist approaches in his artistic thinking. His work is inspired both by the spirituality of Buddhism and Japanese aestheticism and by the philosophy of Marcel Duchamp and the experience of American Minimal and Concept Art. During the past thirty years this master of photography has created a stylistically and conceptually coherent oeuvre; in his works he defines the basic conditions of the medium of photography. Most of his b/w photographs which are taken with a 19th century large format camera, are not created in the short moment of the usual exposure time, but are a frame of a longer time continuum. In this way they sharpen our awareness for another time concept and complex layers of time. The exhibition is organised in collaboration with the K20 Kunstsammlungen North Rhine-Westfalia, Düsseldorf, and after Salzburg will also be presented at the Berlin National Gallery.
