29 November 2007 – 20 January 2008 Peter Zimmermann - To appear and disappear againAt the end of the 1990s, Peter Zimmermann (born 1956) began to employ the computer as a painting tool. He scanned invitation cards or photographs of his own works into the computer, altered them digitally and transferred the newly developed motif onto canvas in poured layers of epoxy resin. The results are colourful, large format abstract images, the glossy surfaces of which are extremely seductive. As in his earlier paintings, which depict the covers of travel guides, atlases, art catalogues or dictionaries, he is not concerned with content here, but with investigating the substance and visual qualities of these splendid and gaudy picture surfaces; their lack of focus and their references to abstract Colour Field painting. The exhibition will set Peter Zimmermann's epoxy resin pictures into a wider context alongside new sculptures and early key works.
