250 YEARS OF THE STAATLICHE GRAPHISCHE SAMMLUNG

The rich collection of works of the Staatliche Graphische Sammlung Munich range from the Gothic to the present day and include all kinds of drawings and prints. 250 years ago Elector Carl Theodor of the Palatinate had a cabinet of copperplate engravings built in Mannheim. It was subsequently moved to Munich as a consequence of the judgement on the Bavarian Right to Succession 1793|94. This laid the foundations for the Munich collection.
The exhibition pays tribute to the commitment of leading patrons of the collection who from the earliest days after the judgement to the present day have assembled over long periods of time works for public viewing. Their strategies and passion have come together to create the individual profile of the Staatliche Graphische Sammlung Munich. To demonstrate this, the exhibition has adopted a different approach to the usual classification of masterpieces into individual landscapes or schools of art. Instead, it is highlighting the significance of private and public commitment to preserving and extending a museum collection, a commitment that is recognised today more than ever.
