‘The Trial of Strength’ - 200 Years Academy of Fine Arts Munich

in 2008 the academy of visual arts munich celebrates its bicentennial. the haus der kunst will devote a comprehensive exhibition to the institution’s varied and fascinating history. At the centre of the show is the academy’s international appeal and vibrancy.
loans from eastern europe, scandinavia and north america vouch for the far-reaching influence of the munich academy, in particular the history painting of the piloty school. Famous graduates of the academy were wilhelm leibl, franz marc and wassilij kandinsky, giorgio de chirico and paul klee; they were precursors for modernity. the exhibition, however, also charts the academy’s loss of importance that began with the end of the first world war, as well as its dubious rise to the ns’s model academy. also taken into consideration is the post-war period with its student unrests in 1968, which lead to a public review of its ns past. last but not least, the exhibition also acts as a reminder to exemplary female graduates in an otherwise male dominated academy.

Built in 1932 as substitute for the legendary Münchner Glaspalast, after Hitler's seizure of power the exhibitions "Entarteten Kunst" (Degenerated Art) became infamous. Since 1949 there are exhibited many great retrospectives
