27 November 2007 – 16 March 2008 Collecting Images [05] - The Art and Antiquities House of BernheimerMeier Bernheimer of Buttenhausen came to Munich twice a year to sell fabrics from a stall at the fair. From these humble beginnings grew the most important antiquities firm in Germany, founded by Meyer’s son Lehmann (1841-1918) in 1864. The firm L. Bernheimer occupied several Munich locations until it built the magnificent “Palais” at the future Lenbachplatz. Lehmann, followed by his sons Otto, Max, and Ernst, transformed the business into the leading purveyor of carpets, textiles, decorative fabrics, sculpture, antique furniture and silver, and Asian artifacts. Their clients included the Bavarian royal house, most of the royal families in Europe, aristocrats and plutocrats, and museums in Munich, and throughout Europe and the United States. The Bernheimers brought together a significant private collection with astrong focus on textiles, in homage to the origins of the familybusiness, and donated works to many Munich museums. The Firm L.Bernheimer was liquidated in 1987, but members of the Bernheimer family remain leading art dealers in Munich and internationally.Curator: Emily D.
