ROMAN ONDAK - MY SUMMER SHOES REST IN WINTER
The sculptor Roman Ondak, born in Slovakia in 1966, is one of the most interesting discoveries among the younger generation of European artists. In a wide range of different media (photography, drawing, video, sculpture) he dedicates his art to social themes (rituals, work, travel, leisure).
The room installation »Passage«, created in Japan in 2004, forms the centrepiece of his first solo exhibition at a German museum. Arranged on a table are some 500 miniature sculptures made from aluminium foil. These mini figures are the result of the highly specific approach taken by the artist which involved Ondak distributing chocolate bars to 500 Japanese steel-workers and asking each of them to create a sculpture from the silver paper wrapping left over after they had eaten the bar. This very ordinary and individual act - the casual screwing up of a piece of aluminium foil - suddenly becomes the centre of attention. A minimal task is transformed into a collective happening. The installation throws open to discussion the role of the artist as a communicator and catalyst of creative action.
