Matthew Barney

This winter (2007/2008) the Goetz Collection will be exhibiting numerous individual works and extensive series of works by the artist Matthew Barney. This is the second time Barney has been exhibited by collector Ingvild Goetz, following a group exhibition in 1996, when Barney featured alongside Tony Oursler and Jeff Wall. The exhibition also documents the fact that Ingvild Goetz – one of the earliest collectors of Barney – has assembled one of the most comprehensive collections of his works in the world.

The exhibition will be distributed throughout the museum, and was planned in close collaboration with the artist, to show the great breadth of his work in the period 1992-2006.

The core of the exhibition is the five-part CREMASTER series, which together form a space-sound-sculpture ensemble. Hanging on a mounting from the ceiling, all the films can be seen and heard in parallel on flat screens. The relevant showcases are placed beneath them. Barney’s latest film DRAWING RESTRAINT 9 (2006) is screened in a cinema-style situation in BASE 103. In the other rooms of the Goetz Collection, Barney is making links between individual works and groups of works by juxtapositions and complementary positioning, to bring out the highly complex thematic intermeshing of threads running through his entire oeuvre. The seven photos of the ENVELOPA: Drawing Restraint 7 (Guillotine) series (1993) act as thematic and formal links, distributed throughout all the rooms of the museum like leitmotifs. This work can be both seen as a preliminary phase of the CREMASTER series and at the same time serves as a transitional work within the Drawing Restraint group, making the narrative film DRAWING RESTRAINT 9 possible.
