30 March 2007 – 6 January 2008 Munich's Social Circles - The photographer Theodor Hilsdorf 1868 - 1944Around the turn of the century (1900) till late into the 1930's Theodor Hilsdorf was ranked as one of the most renown portrait photographers in Munich. His clients were not only royals and aristocrats but also important personalities in the arts and sciences as well in commerce. The portraits of the Princeregent Luitpold, Stefan George, Paul Heyse and Karl Wolfskehl as well as the photographs of Oskar von Miller, Thomas Theodor Heine or Gabriel von Seidl are embedded in our collective visual memory. Important locals such as Franz von Stuck and Ferdinand Sauerbruch as well as international personalities such as Thomas Mann, Richard Strauss, Max Reger and Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen had their portraits shot by Hilsdorf. After the destruction of his studio at the end of WW II. in 1945, Hilsdorf fell into oblivion. The exhibition reconstructs the history of one of the oldest photo studios in Munich and presents a “Who’s who” of bygone VIPs from Dall'Armi to Graf Zeppelin.
