Description of the Museum

The MNAA houses vast and very diversified collections - painting, sculpture, drawing and print, goldsmithing, jewellery, furniture, arts of portuguese expansion, ceramics, textiles, glass, in total more than 44.000 pieces.
Because of the limited space, aspects of preservation and criteria of selection there are exposed about 5000 pieces.
The historical representativeness of the museum's collection is based in the first place on its the provenience of mainly the 18th century: the gigantic artistic stock of the portuguese convents closed during secularisation in 1834 and the second half of that century.
