17 July 2007 – 21 October 2007 João Miguel dos Santos Simões 1907-1972Celebrating the centennial of the birth of João Miguel dos Santos Simões this exhibition intends to bring to public knowledge this remarkable personality of the Portuguese Culture of the twentieth century. Founder of Museu do Azulejo, he developed an important work as an Art Historian and, particularly, as an historian of Azulejo, work that represents, even today, an important scientific contribute. In the early 1960s, this collection was moved to the Convent of Madre de Deus under the supervision of João Miguel dos Santos Simões and works from other museums and state institutions were added. Since then, the collection has continued to expand through acquisitions and donations from individuals and institutions alike. |
