João Miguel dos Santos Simões 1907-1972

Celebrating the centennial of the birth of João Miguel dos Santos Simões this exhibition intends to bring to public knowledge this remarkable personality of the Portuguese Culture of the twentieth century. Founder of Museu do Azulejo, he developed an important work as an Art Historian and, particularly, as an historian of Azulejo, work that represents, even today, an important scientific contribute. Through this commemorative exhibition ,is celebrated not only his exemplar work as Researcher and Museologist but also the way he saved, preserved and divulged the Azulejo patrimony and promoted Portugal culture.

Description of the Museum

This is the largest part of the collection, currently numbering 7,271 inventoried pieces that form the natural core of the Museum.
The collection initially came from the Museu Nacional de Arte Antiga, where some pieces were exhibited in the ceramics section.
In the early 1960s, this collection was moved to the Convent of Madre de Deus under the supervision of João Miguel dos Santos Simões and works from other museums and state institutions were added.
Since then, the collection has continued to expand through acquisitions and donations from individuals and institutions alike.
