As public spending on art institutions continues to decline, private sponsorship is increasingly being used to fill the gaps in state funding. Private enterprises not only donate money, their influence on the orientation of the institutions' programmes is growing too, be it directly or indirectly. Although this development is welcome to some extent, it also permanently changes our cultural landscape. A number of collectors, gallerists and corporations are already very active today, and yet the relationship between public and private participation is rarely made an explicit subject by art institutions, i.e. the topic is seldom squarely addressed or examined in exhibitions.
