20 October 2007 – 13 January 2008 OHIO - JOACHIM BROHMJoachim Brohm spent part of the 1980s completing two series of photographs, one in Ohio (1983–84) and one in the Ruhr area (1988–92). After receiving a grant in 1990 he spent a year in Berlin, where he investigated the effects of reunification. Between 1992 and 2002, Brohm carried out a photographic study of urbanscapes based on his long-term observations in Munich: he photographed an abandoned industrial site on the outskirts of the city belonging to the company Raab Karcher. In 2004/2005, he spent over a year observing the peripheries of the small town of Ravensburg from his car.Whether in the Ruhr area, Berlin or Munich, all of these ecological, economic, cultural and social upheavals have visibly altered the appearance of cities and landscapes in Germany and have led to the development of new identities, opinions and attitudes. Brohm manages to capture these changes and to heighten our awareness of societal transformation. He explores our relationship with reality, as well as how we perceive and interpret it. While doing so, Brohm always takes into account the means of photography itself.
