‘ROOMS, CONVERSATIONS’ - DORA GARCÍA

Time and time again over the course of her scholarship Dora García found herself coming across the Museum in the “Round Corner,” the Stasi (Ministry of State Security) and the events of 1989 in Leipzig in her search for more information about the city. García learned about the methods, motivations and the objectives of the Stasi via the internet. In the article ‘Loyal Dissidents and Stasi Poets’ García found a note on Michael Ruschky’s thesis about an “imaginary GDR,” created after the real GDR was dismantled. In 1995 he wrote, “This new GDR is the product of a community created by experience and narration, a community that could not have existed before 1989 because the GDR did not offer the kind of uninhibited public space that could give rise to this kind of culture.” García begins with the fictionalization of the past and is interested in this potential “community through experience and narration,” as discussed by Ruschky. To what extent is it possible to create this community? How can art offer a medium with which to approach such a loaded topic?
