1 February 2008 – 18 May 2008 Victor Hugo - Visionary DrawingsThe exhibition unveils the surprisingly modern drawings of Victor Hugo (1802-1885), the romantic genius who, in addition to his many talents as a poet and writer, was also a remarkable draughtsman.Mainly from the Maison de Victor Hugo collection in Paris, this selection includes around 100 drawings, collages, manuscripts, letters and prints together with sculptures, photographs, costumes and furniture. The exhibition shows how Victor Hugo was ahead of the times with his experimental approach to the sheet of paper. The same inventive use of a wide variety of techniques and materials can indeed be found in almost all the early 20th-century avant-garde movements from Cubism to Surrealism. The show reveals Victor Hugo’s boundless creativity and highlights the graphic daring and profound originality of this visionary spirit.
