15 July 2008 – 26 October 2008 Travelling in Historical JapanThis exhibition in the Graphics Cabinet of the East Asia collection shows some 40 woodcuts and paintings on the theme of travel in Japan in the 19th century. This was a period in which a veritable fashion for travel broke out in Japan. On show will be a travel album with landscapes by the famous writer and artist Baiitsu as well as woodcuts by Hiroshige depicting the waystages on one of the major roads across the country, the Tôkaidô, which ran from Tôkyo to Kyôto. The 53 waystages with their hostelries and customs posts became a popular subject in Japanese woodcut art.AddressMuseum für Kunst und GewerbeSteintorplatz 20099 Hamburg phone +49 40 42 81 34 27 32 http://www.mkg-hamburg.de Opening HoursTuesday-Sunday 10 a.m. - 6 p.m., Thursday 10 a.m. - 9 p.m., closed on Monday.Description of the Museum |
