28 November 2008 – 15 February 2009 Jakob Philipp Hackert. European Landscape Painters in the Age of GoetheIn his time, Jakob Philipp Hackert was one of the few German-speaking landscape painters of European standing. Following his training in Berlin and stays in Sweden and France, he spent the greater part of his life working in Italy. Here he established his reputation as an internationally acclaimed artist and contributed greatly to shaping the image of Italy before 1800. The exhibition examines Hackert’s role in the development of modern landscape painting in the early 19th century, and how it came to be that, although he had a profound influence on the next generation of artists, Hackert is a largely forgotten artist whose work has only recently attracted renewed interest. This will be the first comprehensive solo exhibition of Hackert’s work ever to be shown in Germany. Around 50 paintings and 70 works on paper on loan from international collections – a clear indication of the equal status of painting and drawing at the end of the 18th century – will give an overview of the artist’s diverse oeuvre.AddressHamburger KunsthalleGlockengießerwall 20095 Hamburg phone +49 40 428 13 12 00 http://www.hamburger-kunsthalle.de Opening HoursTuesday-Sunday 10 a.m. - 6 p.m., Thursday 10 a.m. - 9 p.m., closed on Monday.Description of the Museum |
