25 June 2008 – 31 August 2008 Adieu Yves Saint LaurentYves Saint Laurent, the best-known name in fashion design of the last fifty years, died on 1st June in Paris aged 71. To mark this, we will be presenting 25 items from his prêt-à-porter collections from the period 1970 – 2000 in the collection of historical keyboard instruments. These include evening dresses, elegant fashion for wear during the day and a women’s tuxedo created in1981.Saint Laurent, born in Algeria in 1936, became artistic director of the fashion house of Dior at the early age of 21, founded his own label in 1961 together with Pierre Bergé and only retired from active business in 2002. He set the tone in the world of fashion for decades, at first with his revolutionary tuxedo for women (1966), his “Naked Fashion” (1968) and the first Unisex fragrance (1971). With the opening of his prêt-à-porter line “rive gauche” (1966), he made jeans and trouser suits socially acceptable. With unparalleled creativity, he designed four major collections every year from 1973 – 1999. For all his colourful designs and catholicity of form, the new styles and mixtures, Yves Saint Laurent always remained true to his own personal ideal of womanliness, an image best typified by the actress Catherine Deneuve. The world of fashion is in mourning for a truly great couturier.
