Russian painters and travellers in the 19th century - Collection of the Musée d’Art et d’Histoire

Thanks to a chance donation, a group of drawings, watercolours and gouaches by Russian artists was taken in by the Museum at the end of the 19th century. The rediscovery and examination of this collection, of which some thirty pieces will be displayed, have brought to light their origin and intrinsic interest. A woman painter, descended from old Saint Petersburg aristocracy and married to a Swiss doctor practicing in Russia, is responsible for the presence of these works in Geneva. A member of the Imperial Academy of Fine Arts, Pauline Couriard was the founder and subsequently president of the Women’s Artistic Circle of Saint Petersburg, an amateur artists’ society with the goal of helping women gain access to art classes. On the tenth anniversary of her presidency, she received in 1892 a series of autographed drawings from artists, intellectuals, friends and admirers of the society, which she gave as a sort of testament a few years later to the Musée de Genève.
