30 January 2008 – 23 March 2008 The new room of the sculpted headsSince the middle of the 14th century, ten sculpted heads have imparted rhythm to the architectural style of the Maison Tavel’s façade. They represent an artistic and historical testimonial of major importance for Geneva and Switzerland. Their continued maintenance in situ, a challenge attempted more than twenty years ago at the time of the building’s extensive renovation, had become too hazardous; to ensure the long-term preservation of this remarkable architectural decoration, all the sculptures have been removed from the façade and replaced by casts. One of the rooms of the Maison Tavel is now dedicated to displaying the original sculpted heads. This is an outstanding occasion to contemplate these visages face to face, to admire their expressive and plastic qualities, and to marvel at the bulk of the stone block from which the sculptor made these figures emerge.
