The Birth of Modern Painting: Robert Campin, the Master of Flémalle, and Rogier van der Weyden

In addition to the van Eyck brothers it is above all the Master of Flémalle, or Robert Campin, and his student Rogier van der Weyden, who are centrally important to the origins and the beginnings of the development of early Netherlandish painting. Nevertheless, not only is the identification of the Master of Flémalle with the painter Robert Campin still fiercely debated but so are the boundaries between his work and that of his student Rogier van der Weyden. Four monumental monographs on the two artists have been published in recent years, and at times they come to radically divergent conclusions. Under these circumstances an exhibition that brings together some of these works for the first time represents an opportunity to make persuasive proposals for a solution based on direct comparisons. For the Städel Museum, whose collection includes important works by both masters, the exhibition will be a milestone for scholarship on early Netherlandish art.
