The Emperor Makers

Frankfurt on Main and the Golden Bull · 1356 through 1806
650 years ago Emperor Karl IV promulgated a "Golden Bull" appointing Frankfurt on Main as the place where the Holy Roman Emperors were to be elected. This 1356 "Basic Law" of the German nation’s Holy Roman Empire accorded seven (and later nine) Electors the exclusive right to elect the king at St Bartholomew's Cathedral. As of 1562, the coronations also took place there. 2006 is also the 200th anniversary of the fall of the old empire which was centered around Frankfurt on Main until its very end.
