Reconsidered. Luc Tuymans (in conjunction with the 2007 Max Beckmann Foundation Professorship)

Last year, the Belgian painter Luc Tuymans succeeded William Kentridge in the Städel School’s Max Beckmann Foundation professorship. He began his work in this position in June 2007 by holding three public lectures at the Städel Museum in which he spoke about his experience with the art “system”. He revealed an attitude not devoid of scepticism towards the role of art criticism, state subsidization of culture and the influence exercised by curators. Like William Kentridge, Luc Tuymans will bring the one-year professorship to an end with an exhibition developed especially for the Städel Museum. In the past years, Luc Tuymans has provided decisive impulses in the area of figurative painting, a context in which he explores historical, political and religious themes. Is painting imprisoned in its own tradition, paralyzed, lacking any and all prospects for the future? Tuymans sees an opportunity for innovation in the paradox of the “authentic forgery”. Tragedies of recent history emerge from the mists of memory in the harmless guise of banal everyday constellations.
