Water, Colour, Light: Selected Watercolours from the Department of Prints and Drawings

It is a category all its own, the fascination of watercolour, an artistic technique unparalleled in its ability to give expression to the luminosity, purity and transparency of colour. Weightlessness, vitality and spontaneity distinguish its painterly qualities. The exhibition “Water, Colour, Light: Selected Watercolours from the Department of Prints and Drawings” invites visitors to explore the diversity offered by this highly sophisticated medium in outstanding examples from our own holdings, covering periods and styles up to the very most recent. Vedute, landscapes viewed from near and far, atmospheric impressions such as cloud studies, still lifes, even surrealist-like pictorial creations by J. J. de Boissieu, Jules Desprez, Johann Wolfgang Goethe, Carl Philipp Fohr, Carl Rottmann, Carl Morgenstern, Rudolf von Alt, Louis Eysen, Paul Cézanne, Lovis Corinth, Emil Nolde, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Georg Baselitz, Claes Oldenburg and many other well-known artists bear testimony to the masterful handling of the brush and the glazed, water-soluble colours.

Description of the Museum

700 years of European history are represented in a collection of 2,700 paintings, 600 sculptures and 100,000 prints and drawings by artists ranging from Dürer, Holbein and Cranach to Rembrandt, Vermeer, Monet, Van Gogh and Cézanne to Matisse and Picasso, Bacon and Baselitz, Serra and Palermo.
