The Magic of Things. Still Life Painting 1500-1800

The exhibition "The Magic of Things. Still Life Painting 1500-1800" at the Städel Museum consists of well over 80 masterpieces. It retraces the evolution of still-life painting in the northern and southern Netherlands as well as Germany from its preliminary stages in the late fifteenth century to its heyday in the late eighteenth century. To this end, it unites the superb holdings of three museums - the Städel Museum in Frankfurt, the Hessisches Landesmuseum Darmstadt and the Kunstmuseum Basel - while also further enhancing them with selected loans from other collections, public and private. As a result, the show spreads out a panorama of the still life's development and various manifestations spanning more than two and a half centuries, devoted as much to the prosaic works of the early seventeenth century as to the later extravagant assemblages, as much to various types of "meals" as to copious bouquets of flowers, as much to picturesque animal still lifes as to scientifically oriented ones.
