Lucas van Leyden (1489/94-1533): Masterworks of Printmaking.

In the early sixteenth century Lucas van Leyden was, along with Dürer, one of the most famous and esteemed printmakers north of the Alps. His works are distinguished by independent and original choices of motif and narrative styles. In terms of technique, his engravings are distinguished from those of Dürer by their delicate refinement of the draftsman’s line and an interest in atmospheric effects. The Städel’s Department of Prints and Drawings has a substantial number of prints by Lucas van Leyden that will be presented and commented on in this exhibition. They will be supplemented by selected sheets on loan from the prints and drawings collections of Amsterdam, Berlin, and Dresden and examples of works by other artists—for example, Schongauer, Dürer, and Rembrandt—for comparison.

700 years of European history are represented in a collection of 2,700 paintings, 600 sculptures and 100,000 prints and drawings by artists ranging from Dürer, Holbein and Cranach to Rembrandt, Vermeer, Monet, Van Gogh and Cézanne to Matisse and Picasso, Bacon and Baselitz, Serra and Palermo.
