31 May 2006 – 29 October 2006 Focus on Jan van Eyck: Lucca Madonna, circa 1437-38 (Inv. No. 944)The exhibition sheds light on Jan van Eyck’s famous Lucca Madonna, a central work in the Städel museum’s collection of early Netherlandish art. “Mind maps” that fill an entire wall explain the painting: the name by which it is generally known and how it came to the Städel, the use of the painting, the subject matter and the attributes, and the significance and purpose of the figures. There are also discussions of the specific painting technique used by the early Netherlanders, which made it possible to reproduce details of a wide range of materials with a realism previously unimaginable.Curator: Priv.
