The master and the Mangaka

The comic strip is regarded as an invention of the last century. In point of fact there are numerous elements of sequential narrative in medieval painting, for example in the picture sequences of the Cologne School of painting, which often tell a story. The Wallraf will juxtapose its famous panel painting cycle of the St Ursula legend, which was created in 1450/60 by this very School, and a series of drawings by Sascha Schätzchen, the current master of the comic strip, who in Germany is regarded as the best mangaka.

Description of the Museum

The museum is one of the big classical galleries in Germany. Focusses of the collection are the departments of the Middle Ages, the Baroque (among others Rubens and Rembrandt) and the 19. century.
