8 May 2008 – 22 June 2008 “Böhmen liegt am Meer”. The Frieder Burda CollectionWorks of High Modernism mark, in terms of both chronology and ideas, the point of departure for the Frieder Burda Collection. Beginning with the German Expressionists, several paths lead through the art of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. In Böhmen liegt am Meer the furrows of a road run through a broad field designed in the expressive manner. A large-format work by Anselm Kiefer from 1995 symbolizes a painting with roots in Expressionism but also in Art Informel and gestural abstraction, moving between figuration and abstraction. This selection of works from the Frieder Burda Collection touches on this spectrum in a number of ways. Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, August Macke, and Alexej von Jawlensky are juxtaposed with Max Beckmann, and Pablo Picasso. Markus Lüpertz, Sigmar Polke, Arnulf Rainer, and Anselm Kiefer join them as important representatives of German postwar painting.AddressMuseum Frieder BurdaLichtentaler Allee 8 b 76530 Baden-Baden phone +49 7221 39 89 80 http://www.museum-frieder-burda.de Opening HoursTuesday-Sunday 11 a.m. - 6 p.m., closed on Monday.
